The separate countrywide half-day work abstention programme by assistant teachers of the government primary schools and teachers of secondary-level schools under the monthly pay order system was observed sporadically on Thursday demanding pay hike and protesting at attacks on teachers.

In the capital, the teachers did not observe the work abstention programmes strictly while in some districts these were observed.


The primary teachers, under the banner of Primary Assistant Teachers Association Unity Council, are scheduled to continue the half-day strike till May 25 demanding salary hike and promotion.

Members of law enforcement agencies on Wednesday detained the Unity Council of Teachers and Employees, a banner for the MPO teachers demanding nationalisation of their jobs and pay hike to be met before forthcoming Eid-ul-Azha, said its convener Sheikh Kawser Ahmed in Dhaka.

Protesting at the detention, the teachers were scheduled to observe work abstention on Thursday.

In Dhaka teachers from different schools including Shaheed Buddhijibi Dr Amin Uddin Govt Primary School, Dhanmondi 2 No Girls Govt Primary School, Dhanmondi High School and Nilkhet High School confirmed that they did not observe the work abstention.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Chattogram reported quoting the Primary Assistant Teachers’ Unity Council for the Chattogram region convener, Abdur Rahman, that the assistant teachers observed half-day work abstention in both Chattogram city and its surrounding districts.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rajshahi reported that assistant teachers from most of the government primary schools across Rajshahi observed the strike.

They began their protest after morning assembly and continued till noon, leaving classes suspended in many schools.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rangpur reported that the assistant teachers of the government primary schools observed the work abstention programme in different schools. 

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Sylhet reported that assistant teachers of the government primary schools in Sylhet reportedly did not observe the scheduled half-day strike.

The teachers of secondary level schools under the MPO system, however, observed the strike.

The teachers under the MPO system did not observe the work abstention in Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Rangpur, reported by the ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondents in these districts.

The Unity Council of Teachers and Employees general secretary Md Shamim Al Mamun claimed that the work abstention was not observed in the capital that much but it was observed outside Dhaka.

He added that they would hold a meeting on May 31 to set the next course of their action.
