Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, started a sit-in programme at Shahbagh crossing in Dhaka on Thursday morning demanding justice for Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo.
They had started the sit-in at around 10:00am amid pouring rain.
The vehicular movement in the area immediately came to a stop.
Shahriar, a student of the Institute of Education and Research and also a leader of the DU unit of JCD, died in an attack by miscreants in the Suhrawardy Udyan area in Dhaka.
On May 14, the police arrested three ‘outsiders’ for their suspected involvement in the murder. On Tuesday night three more were arrested in this connection.
JCD on Wednesday announced that they would hold sit-in programme at Shahbagh and in front of the InterContinental Dhaka between 10:00am and 5:00pm on Thursday demanding justice for Shahriar.
On Thursday from the sit-in JCD president Rakibul Islam Rakib said that they would continue their protest until the real perpetrators would be arrested.
Meanwhile, a section of students from the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University, where Shahriar studied, at a press conference on Wednesday threatened to hold a march towards the home ministry on Thursday if there was no visible progress in probing the murder case.
The JCD on Tuesday kept the capital’s Shahbagh crossing blocked for about two hours.
The area witnessed huge traffic congestion and caused immense suffering to the people.
On May 18, JCD blocked the Shahbagh crossing for the same reason.
