Students of the finance department at Rajshahi University on Wednesday demanded the permanent expulsion of associate professor Mohammad Hedayet Ullah and a female student of the department over allegations of sexual misconduct.
They also called for exemplary punishment for four other students who were allegedly involved in blackmailing the teacher and the female student.
The demands were made at a press conference held at the university’s Paribahan Chattar at around noon.
Students alleged that Hedayet Ullah was caught in a compromising situation with the female student inside his office on Sunday evening.
They claimed that after being confronted, the teacher attempted to settle the matter by paying off the students who caught them.
Despite this, a video clip of the incident was leaked on social media, they said.
The students alleged that Hedayet Ullah had previously harassed female students by summoning them to his room, intentionally failing them in exams, and calling them to his office, particularly targeting those who are in purdah.
They also demanded exemplary punishment for the other four students who caught Hedayet Ullah red-handed but blackmailed him for money.
Meanwhile, Hedayet Ullah lodged a case against the four students with the Motihar police station on Tuesday night on charges of forcibly entering his chamber and blackmailing him, confirmed the police station officer-in-charge, Abdul Malek.
In his complaint, the teacher alleged that an MBA student from his department visited his office to discuss academic matters.
‘At one point, a group of four students forcibly entered the room, verbally abused them, physically harassed the student, and began recording video footage. They also attempted to assault the student and threatened her with rape,’ he alleged.
He further alleged that the group demanded Tk 5 lakh, threatening to leak the video if he did not comply. According to the complaint, the teacher withdrew Tk 1 lakh from the university’s Zuberi Building ATM booth and handed it over that evening.
He claimed to have given an additional Tk 2 lakh the next day, on the promise that the footage would be deleted.
