The police arrested singer Mainul Hasan Noble at a house in the Demra Staff Quarter area of the capital early Tuesday allegedly for raping and torturing a woman keeping her confined at a house in Dhaka for seven months.
Demra police station officer-in-charge Mahmudur Rahman said that they arrested Noble, 31, at about 2:00am on Tuesday as the victim filed a case with his police station Monday night accusing the singer of rape and torture in confinement.
He said that the victim filed the case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000.
The police officer said that Nobel was produced before the court of Dhaka metropolitan聽 magistrate Zia Uddin Ahmed and the court sent him to jail rejecting the accused鈥檚 bail prayer.
According to a Dhaka Metropolitan Police press release, the victim was introduced to Noble through social media in 2018 and had been in talks over the phone often.
It said that Nobel met the victim at Mohamamdpur on November 12, 2024 and took her to his home in the Demra area to visit his studio there.
The release said that Nobel kept her confined there with the help of two or three unidentified people.
It said that Noble damaged the victim鈥檚 mobile phone, tortured and raped her in a drunken condition and filmed the incident on a mobile phone.
The DMP release said that Noble kept the victim confined at his home till May 19 by threatening to share the video on Social media.
As a video clipping of torturing the victim by Nobel went viral on social media, the victim鈥檚 family could identify her and made a phone call to the National Emergency Service hotline number 999 on Monday, the release said.
It said that a team of Demra police reached the spot at about 9:30pm on Monday and rescued the victim.
The police said that they arrested Noble with the help of information and communication technology after analysing CCTV footage.
Nobel secured the 2nd runner-up position in 2019 at a show Saregamapa organised by Indian television channel Zee Bangla and bagged the 鈥榁iewer鈥檚 Choice鈥� award for his enthralling covers of fan-favorite classic songs from James and Ayub Bachchu.
In 2023, Noble went to perform at a college concert in a drunken condition in Kurigram and people threw bottles and shoes at him.
In the same year, he was also arrested in a fraud case as he allegedly took money from a sponsor but did not perform. Later, he secured bail from the court.
