
The government of Bangladesh has recently awarded United International University professor Khondaker A Mamun for his contributions towards the telecom and information and communication technology sector in the country.
In celebration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025, the award was conferred by the post and telecommunication division and presented by Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, youth and sports and local government, rural development and cooperatives adviser, at a ceremony in Dhaka on Saturday, said a press release on Sunday.
The award ceremony was graced by, among others, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to chief adviser in charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology; Md Shish Haydar Chowdhury, secretary, ICT division; and Mahbuba Farzana, secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Khondaker A Mamun, professor of arti铿乧ial intelligence at the department of computer science and engineering; founder, Advanced Intelligent Multidisciplinary System Lab, UIU; and Institute of Research, Innovation, Incubation and Commercialisation, UIU, has been a driving force behind transformative technology-based solutions in Bangladesh with over 20 years of contributions to research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Professor Mamun founded CMED Health, a pioneering research-to-commercialise AI for health initiative transforming the healthcare landscape in Bangladesh and has the potential to scale it in other low- and middle-income countries.
CMED has impacted over 4 million lives through the creation of digital health accounts and providing patient-centring, comprehensive preventive and primary healthcare to alleviate poverty by reducing out-of-pocket health expenditure, transforming healthcare access and quality for the 7 billion people living in these regions.
Professor Mamun is also internationally recognised for his pioneering research in brain鈥揷omputer interfaces, assistive technologies for persons with disabilities, and adaptive educational tools that personalise learning experiences.
On the policy front, Mamun has served as a key adviser to the government of Bangladesh, providing strategic guidance on national AI strategy, digital health frameworks, disability policy, and inclusive education.
