Anti-Corruption Commission chair Mohammad Abdul Momen on Sunday said that corruption was creating inequality in society.
Speaking at the 175th public hearing against corruption, organised by the ACC at Moulvibazar Shilpakala Academy, the ACC chief urged all sectors of society to unite against corruption.
The daylong public hearing was held in collaboration with the district administration and the district corruption prevention committee under the slogan ‘Let us unite against corruption.’
Moulvibazar deputy commissioner Md Israil Hossain presided over the public hearing where a total of 58 complaints about corruption were heard against 18 government offices.
Of the complaints made, those about irregularities, corruption, and embezzlement against the head teacher of Hafiza Khatun Girls’ High School were accepted for conducting inquiries while 11 of the complaints were resolved immediately.
ACC chair Momen said, ‘We consciously offer bribes to receive legitimate services. This must stop. If Moulvibazar is to become a bribe- and corruption-free district, service providers and recipients must work sincerely.’
Retired brigadier general Hafiz Ahsan Farid said, ‘The ACC has declared war on corruption, but it cannot win this war alone. The people of the country must come forward for the purpose.’
‘Most often, people are forced to give bribes. But if everyone takes a stand, corruption can be prevented,’ he said.
‘As individuals, we must fulfill our duties. We must refuse to pay bribes, must protest, must raise our voice, must call others for help, must record incidents. Only then will institutional corruption come down,’ he went on.
