The stakeholders of Qaumi madrasahs urged the government to fix fair prices for the rawhide of the sacrificial animals for the coming Eid-ul-Azha.
They also demanded removal of the discrimination in the leather sector persisting over the past years.
Their demands came at a press conference organised by the ‘Leather industry protection committee’ platform at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Saturday.
At the event, Mufti Abdullah Yahia, the platform’s convener, said that the leather industry, one of the most promising sectors of the national economy, was currently fraught with multifaceted crises.
‘Once the price of rawhides was Tk 3,000–4,000 each, but it dropped to Tk 500–600 currently, which was a deliberate action of the past government,’ he added.
He called for effective intervention from the government to safeguard the sector.
The speakers at the event also urged the government to modernise the tannery industry, solve its existing issues and take initiative to export finished leather goods.
They also urged the government to establish region-based rawhide protection and display centres.
Leaders from Qaumi madrassahs, National Citizens Party, Hefajat-e-Islam, Khelafat Majlish and Islami Andolon Bangladesh also spoke at the event.
