
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s detective branch on Friday evening released the Jagannath University student it had taken into its custody for questioning over throwing a water bottle at information and broadcasting adviser Mahfuj Alam.
According to JnU proctor Muhammad Tazammol Hoque, his name is Ishtiaque Hossain, a student of the economics department of the university.
Earlier on May 14 night, a protester hurled a water bottle that hit the adviser in the head while he was addressing the Jagannath University students, who were protesting to press their demands through a sit-in in front of the Kakrail Mosque police barricade near the chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna in the capital Dhaka.
DMP deputy commissioner for media Md Talebur Rahman in a text message at about 7:40pm on Friday said that the youth who had been taken into the DB custody for questioning over the incident was handed over to his parents after quizzing.
Earlier on Friday noon, the DMP deputy commissioner in a text message confirmed to the media that the youth had been taken into the DB custody. In the message, the DMP, however, did not mention when he was taken into the DB custody.
Meanwhile, JnU protesting students from the ongoing sit-in and hunger strike at 5:00pm on Friday announced a two-hour ultimatum to the DB to release the youth.
Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal’s JnU unit member secretary Shamsul Arefin announced that the protesters would besiege the DB office if the JnU student would not be released within the timeframe.
The protesting JnU teachers and students continued sit-in for the third day on Friday at the Kakrail crossing and they started a hunger strike on the day, to press their four-point demand, including the introduction of a ‘housing stipend’ for JnU students from the forthcoming financial year.
On May 15, the Jagannath University Teachers’ Association announced a complete shutdown of the university until their demands are met.
