A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Tuesday placed popular folk singer and former Awami League lawmaker for Manikganj-2 Momtaz Begum on four-day remand in police custody 聽over the allegations of killing Md Sagar in the capital鈥檚 Mirpur on July 19, 2024.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after a hearing at which Mirpur Model Police sub-inspector Monirul Islam sought seven-day remand for interrogating Momtaz in the case, said court officials.


On Monday night, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch arrested Momtaz Begum at Dhanmondi in Dhaka city and took her to the DB office on Minto Road at about 11:45pm, said DB officials.聽

According to the remand prayers submitted to the court, Md Sagar was shot on the chest at about 4:00pm on July 19 by the activists of Awami League and its associate bodies during when he was demonstrating in the movement led by the Student Movement Against Discrimination in the Mirpur-10 roundabout area.聽

Later in the small hours of July 20, Sagar鈥檚 mother found his body at a Mirpur hospital.

On November 27, 2024, victim鈥檚 mother Mst Beauty Akhter, filed a case with the Mirpur Model Police against 243 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Momtaz Begum. The singer is the 49th accused in the case.
