Adviser to the ministries of road transport and bridges and railways Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan on Monday said that no cattle markets would be allowed on the roads and highways across the country.

Directives were also given to restrain cattle from coming on the roads and share the maps of the cattle markets with all stakeholders, he also said at a meeting.

The inter-ministerial meeting, chaired by the adviser, held at the Bangladesh Power Development Board head office Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka city to make Eid journeys safe and smooth.

This year Eid-ul-Azha is likely to be held on June 7.

Every year the authorities take similar decisions to keep cattle markets off the roads and highways ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha, but their instructions are frequently flouted across the country and even in Dhaka city.

Fouzul Kabir on Monday meeting said that to make the Eid journeys comfortable movement of trucks and covered vans would mostly be closed in June 4–6 on the eve of Eid and in June 12–14 after Eid.

During that period, only those cargo vehicles that would carry cattle, perishable items and export oriented products would be allowed to run, he added.

The meeting also decided that Compress Natural Gas filling stations will remain open for 24 hours during the seven days just before Eid and five days just after Eid.

The adviser also said that they would strengthen monitoring on buses to check charging extra as fares.

The administration would also monitor if any driver of cattle-laden vehicles was forced to pay extortion, he continued, adding that booths of different banks would be installed in the cattle markets.

The adviser mentioned that they took initiatives to bring four cargos of Liquefied Natural Gas to tackle load shedding during Eid.

He added that directives were also sent to check road accidents and facilitate smooth movement of cattle-laden vehicles.

At the meeting, decision was also taken to stop the ongoing construction works on the roads under different projects in the capital, including Mass Rapid Transit lines, Dhaka Elevated Expressway and projects under the Dhaka Water Supply And Sewerage Authority, Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited, Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC and other public institutions.

The meeting was also attended by local government, rural development and cooperatives ministry adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, special assistant to the chief adviser Sheik Moinuddin, Road Transport and Highways Division senior secretary Md Ehsanul Hoque, Bridges Division secretary Md Abdur Rouf, and railways ministry secretary Md Fahimul Islam.
