Bangladesh interim government on Monday issued a gazette notification imposing ban on all activities of Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and like-minded organisations until the completion of ongoing trial proceedings against the party’s leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal.
According to the notification issued by the Political Branch of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the ban—effective immediately— would cover all forms of publication, media and social media campaigns, processions, meetings, rallies and conferences organised by the Awami League and its associated entities.
The home ministry notification said that from January 6, 2009 to August 5, 2024, during its time in office, the Awami League and its affiliates engaged in widespread repression, including enforced disappearances, political killings, torture, arson and crimes against humanity.
It added that similar activities had resumed following August 5, 2024, including incitement via social media by fugitive leaders, dissemination of anti-state leaflets and acts of vandalism.
The notification said there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the organisations concerned were involved in ‘criminal and terrorist-like activities aimed at destabilising the state and instilling fear in the public.’
Invoking powers under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 and the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009, the government deemed the prohibition necessary to protect national security, ensure public safety, and safeguard the integrity of ongoing judicial processes.
