A new political platform, United People’s Bangladesh (UP Bangladesh), was launched on Friday with the aim of maintaining the inspiration, pledge and unity of the July mass uprising.

The 82-member platform, including leaders from the National Citizen’s Committee formed in the aftermath of the July uprising, was announced at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital Dhaka at about 4:30pm on the day.

Abdur Rahman, father of July martyr Osman Patwari, announced the convening committee.

Former Dhaka University unit Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir president Ali Ahsan Zonaed was named convenor, Arefin Muhammad Hizbullah member secretary, former DU unit Shibir president Rafe Salman Rifat chief coordinator, Nayeem Ahmed organizer and Shahrin Era spokesperson.

Ali Ahsan Junayed said that the platform would work to resist fascism, hegemony, communalism and corruption. ‘Our political journey is rooted in the July uprising. Our only politics will be to realise the dreams of the July martyred families,’ he said.

Its primary demands include justice for the victims of Pilkhana, Shapla and July massacres, banning the fascist Awami League and ensuring economic rehabilitation of injured July fighters and families of the martyrs, he said.

Family members of the martyrs of the July uprising were also present on the occasion.
