The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal is likely to submit on Monday a probe report on ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s role in a case filed over the mass killings during the July uprising in 2024.

The ICT chief prosecutor Tajul Islam came up with the information in his Facebook page on Friday, but he did not mention in which case against Hasina the probe report will be submitted.

He said in the post, ‘I hope the investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal will submit the report of the July genocide against Sheikh Hasina to the chief prosecutor on Monday.’

‘After the investigation report is submitted, the formal trial against Hasina will begin with the filing of the ‘formal charge’,’ he noted.

He further stated, ‘A probe report has already been filed against senior police officers on charge of the Chankharpul killings. The formal charge for the trial of the  killings will be submitted this week and through this, the formal trial of the July genocide will begin, Insha Allah.’

The chief prosecutor also revealed that the tribunal has so far issued arrest warrants for 141 individuals in 22 cases related to the July–August uprising, enforced disappearances, and the attack on the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at the Shapla Chattar in the capital city. Of them, 54 have been arrested.

The Chief Prosecutor’s Office has received a total of 339 complaints to date, of which 39 have been selected for formal investigation. Arrest warrants in 22 pending cases have been issued while formal charges are still under preparation, Tajul said.

As of April 1, the ICT investigation agency was probing 34 cases involving 167 accused individuals. Among them, 45 people — mostly police officers — have been arrested while 33 have formally been shown arrested in cases linked to the mass uprising.

Following the uprising, which left hundreds of people dead and thousands injured in alleged attacks by members of law enforcing agencies and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organisations, the tribunal has been revived after years of inactivity.
