
Former president Abdul Hamid left Dhaka for Bangkok for medical treatment by a flight of Thai Airways from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital early Thursday.
Hamid, named in a case lodged on January 14 with Kishoreganj police station over the allegations of attacking protesting students during the July-August mass uprising, went to Thailand for treatment by Thai Airways flight TG 340 at about 3:05am on Thursday, said a senior official of the special branch of the police.
‘We allowed him to cross the immigration as there is no travel ban against him either from the court or from the security agencies,’ he added.
According to HSIA authorities, the Thai TG 340 flight departed from Dhaka airport at about 3:05am Bangladesh time and landed at Bangkok at about 6:15am Thailand time.
The case against Hamid also accused deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her family members and Awami League leaders, is not a murder case, Kishoreganj police station officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun said.
Following Hamid’s departure from the HSIA, different quarters on Thursday demanded the resignation of the home adviser and punishment for the police officials concerned for assisting Hamid to leave the country.
Amid the protests, the Bangladesh Police withdrew the Kishoreganj superintendent of police and an additional superintendent of police for immigration in Dhaka from their workplaces.
Police headquarters in a press release said that they also suspended two officials, including the investigation officer of the case against Hamid and a special branch official.
It said that the police formed a three-member probe committee led by the additional inspector general of police for administration to investigate the departure of Hamid from the country.
A group of students under the banner of ‘General Students of Dhaka University’ formed a human chain at the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the DU campus protesting against allowing Hamid to fly aboard, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· DU Correspondent reported.
A faction of the Gono Odhikar Parishad in a press release on Thursday demanded the resignation of the home adviser within 48 hours for ‘helping’ Hamid to go abroad.
Home adviser lieutenant general (retired) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Thursday vowed to step down if he failed to bring those who assisted Hamid to leave the country to book.
He made the remark while answering a question from the students involved in the July-August mass uprising at the conference room of Dinajpur deputy commissioner after attending a meeting there, United News of Bangladesh reported.
Abdul Hamid served as Bangladesh president for two consecutive terms during the Awami League regime, firstly between April 24, 2013 and April 24, 2018 and secondly and lastly between April 24, 2018 and April 24, 2023.
Following his departure from the president’s official residence Bangabhaban, he started living at his home in the capital’s Nikunja area.
He served as the speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad between January 2009 and April 2013.
