Today is the 164th anniversary of birth of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, a key and influential figure in Bengali literature.

Marking the day, the cultural affairs ministry will inaugurate a three-day programme at Shilaidaha under Kumarkhali in Kushtia today.


Apart from the Shilaidaha programme, in line with the national events, local administrations will arrange different programmes at Patisar in Naogaon, Shahzadpur in Sirajganj and Dakshindihi and Pithabhog in Khulna, the places where Rabindranath had memories, reported Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.

To celebrate the day, 600 souvenirs and 20,000 posters will be printed under the supervision of the cultural affairs ministry and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has also taken a three-day programme, including cultural functions and exhibition on artworks by Rabindranath Tagore.

Bangla Academy will organise a discussion, marking the anniversary of birth of Rabindranath.

Cultural organisation Chhayanaut will also organise a two-day programme starting today at its auditorium at Dhanmondi in the capital Dhaka.

Born on the 25th of the Bangla month of Baishakh in 1268 at Jorasanko in Kolkata to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, Rabindranath Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in literature for his sensitive verses in Geetanjali in 1913.

Rabindranath’s literary works, including poems, novels, short stories, songs, dance-dramas and essays, always provide insights into social reality and seek to add value to individual’s life.

His compositions, dedicated to the people of the region, were chosen by two nations as their national anthem – Bangladesh’s ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ and India’s ‘Jana Gana Mana’. The Sri Lankan national anthem was also inspired by his work.

Rabindranath Tagore’s literary works include Geetanjali, Manasi, Sonar Tari, Gitimalya, Balaka, Gora, Ghare-Baire, Raja, Dakghar, Achalayatan, Muktadhara, Raktakarabi and Jogajog.

His English renderings of poetry include The Gardener, Fruit-Gathering and The Fugitive.

He also left numerous drawings and paintings and songs for which he wrote music himself.

Rabindranath Tagore passed away in Kolkata on Shraban 22 in Bangla year 1348.
