The two city corporations of Dhaka have decided to set up a total of 19 temporary cattle markets, along with two permanent ones, ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, the second-largest religious festival for Muslims, to be celebrated next month.
Dhaka North City Corporation will set up 10 temporary cattle markets, supplementing its permanent facility in Gabtoli, while Dhaka South City Corporation plans to arrange 9 temporary markets in addition to its permanent one in Sarulia.
The temporary cattle markets will operate for five days, including the Eid day, allowing for the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals at designated locations.
Both city corporations have already called for tenders to finalize the leasing of these markets. The lease for each site will be awarded to the highest bidder.
However, if the bids do not meet the expected rates at any location, those sites will be re-tendered, according to officials of the property departments of the two city corporations.
DNCC has called for tenders to lease 10 temporary markets. Among them, the government-set lease price for the open space beside the Suti Bhola canal in Bhatara is Tk 3.70 crore.
The open space near Bou Bazar, adjacent to sectors 16 and 18 in Uttara Diabari, has a lease price of Tk 8.90 crore, while blocks M-4, M-5, and N-4 (partially on the north side of the lake), and part of Sunvalley in Eastern Housing, Aftabnagar, are priced at Tk 1.77 crore.

‘The first phase of tender submission will close on May 15. The second phase will end on May 26. If bids in the first phase exceed the government-set lease rates, there will be no need to proceed with the second phase,’ DNCC’s Chief Property Officer Farzana Khanam told BSS.
DSCC has also called for tenders to lease 9 temporary markets. These include the area near Maitree Sangha Club, close to Khilgaon Railway Gate Bazaar in North Shahjahanpur, priced at Tk 1.70 crore.

‘Initially, there was a plan to set up cattle markets in Aftabnagar and Meradia. However, DSCC has withdrawn the decision due to a court verdict,’ DSCC Chief Property Officer Kaishar Mohammad Farabi told BSS.
‘Within three days of tender acceptance, the successful bidder must pay the remaining amount (excluding the security deposit), along with 15 percent VAT, 10 percent income tax, and the designated cleaning fees to the city corporation to receive the official work order,’ he added.
Apart from these 19 temporary cattle markets, the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals will also continue at the Gabtoli market in the north and the Sarulia market in the south.
