The police on Sunday recovered the body of a man from the lift shaft of the abandoned building housing the Naogaon district Awami League office.
The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, son of Mosir Uddin of Shahidul Mor area under Naogaon Sadar upazila. He was reported to be around 35 years old.
Local residents said that they heard a loud thud from the building at about 2:00pm.
Saiful Islam, a local resident who rushed with others to the scene at the sound, said that they found a man lying in a pool of blood inside the lift shaft.
They called the police immediately.
Noor-A-Alam Siddiqi, officer-in-charge of Naogaon sadar police, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they recovered the body from the lift shaft at about 3:30pm.
‘The family members said that Delwar was a drug-addict and petty thief. Primary investigation suggests that he might have entered the seven-storey building to steal lift cables or other metal articles and accidentally fell from the top floor,’ he said, adding that they sent the body to Naogaon Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
The police official said that the building had remained abandoned after an angry mob set it on fire following the fall of the AL regime amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
