The Rapid Action Battalion early Saturday arrested a close associate of listed crime suspect Subrata Bain in connection with the murder of a Juba Dal activist in the capital’s Hatirjheel area on April 19.
A team of RAB-3 arrested Bain’s close associate Mahfuzur Rahman Bipu, 48, from a spot under the Modhukhali police in Faridpur at about 3:00am on Saturday, said Sanad Barua of RAB-3 media wing.
Bipu was linked to various crimes, including extortion and terror acts in Hatirjheel and Moghbazar, he said.
‘Bipu was handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch’s Tejgaon zone in a case filed over the murder of a Juba Dal activist Md Arif Sikder,’ added the RAB-3 official.
At least four separate cases were filed against him, including murder and a case under the Arms Act with the Mirpur police, a RAB-3 press release said.
According to the RAB, 26-year-old Juba Dal activist Arif was shot with the intent to kill at ‘The Jheel Café’ in the city’s Nayatola area under the Hatirjheel police on April 19.
Arif succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 21.
Later on, Arif’s sister filed a case with the Hatirjheel police, naming Bipu and several others as accused.
The murder investigation of the case was handed over to the DB Tejgaon on April 24.
