
Journalist, artistes and academics were among 201 accused in an attempt to murder case of a madrassah student, Saifuddin Mohammad Emdad, during the student-led July uprising.
Deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina was named as the prime accused in the case.
On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam accepted the complaint and directed Shahbagh police to register it as a case, said ABM Jobayer, the plaintiff鈥檚 lawyer.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Khalid Mansoor said on Friday that they were yet to receive the court order.
The accused journalists are Kalbela editor Santosh Sharma, Bangladesh聽 Pratidin鈥檚 former editor Naeem Nizam, Bhorer Kagoj鈥檚 former editor Shyamal Dutta, former head of Ekattor TV Mozammel Haque, journalist Munni Saha and others.
The artistes named in the case included actors Meher Afroz Shaon, Riaz, Chanchal Chowdhury, Aruna Biswas, Jyotika Jyoti, Shomi Kaiser, Zayed Khan, Ferdous and others.
Additionally, academics named in the case included Zafar Iqbal, Jagannath University former vice-chancellor Mizanur Rahman, National University former VC Harun Or Rashid, Jahangirnagar University former VC Anwar Hossain, and others.
Earlier on March 20, MA Hashem Raju filed a petition as the plaintiff in this case.
On that day, after recording the plaintiff鈥檚 statement, the court ordered Shahbagh OC to submit a report on whether there were any other cases related to this incident filed with that police station.
The case stated that the victim, under the leadership of MA Hashem Raju, along with other protesters, reached the intersection in front of the Intercontinental Hotel at Paribagh at around 11:30am on August 4, 2024.
At that time, leaders and activists of Awami League, Chhatra League and Juba League blocked them and the accused allegedly opened fire, threw hand grenades, petrol bombs, and exploded cocktails intending to kill the victim and others.
Meanwhile, at least 17 artistes, including actress and former Awami League lawmaker for reserved seat Suborna Mustafa, and actresses Apu Biswas and Nipun Akter, recently have been named in a case of attempted murder committed during the July-August mass uprising in 2024.
