
A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted seven-day remand for actor Siddiqur Rahman Siddique in an attempted murder case of a van driver, Jabbar Ali Hawlader, during the July-August uprising in the Gulshan area.
Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Sanaullah issued the order after the accused was produced before the court with a 10-day remand plea, a court official confirmed.
Earlier on Tuesday, Siddique was physically assaulted allegedly by a group of people identifying themselves as activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in Dhaka鈥檚 Kakrail area before being handed over to the Ramna police station.
Later, he was handed over to the Gulshan police station as two cases of the July-August uprising were filed against him with the police station.
According to the case statement, Awami League activists opened fire on protesters during the anti-discrimination movement on July 19, leaving van driver Jabbar Ali Howlader injured.
Jabbar later filed a case with the Gulshan police station against 109 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Siddiq, originally from Madhupur in Tangail, had been active in the entertainment industry for over two decades.
He previously sought nominations from the AL to contest elections from Dhaka-17 and Tangail-1 constituencies.
