Acres of cropland including paddy, maize, and mango orchards have been affected by the nor’wester that swept through different upazilas in Rangpur on Saturday night.

The nor’wester along with hailstorms in some places caused extensive damage in the district.


Mostafizur Rhaman, an official of Rangpur Met Office, said that the velocity of the wind was about 8 mile per hour and 20mm of rainfall was recorded. Starting at about 10:10pm, the storm, however, lasted for a few minutes.

Several tin-shed and bamboo houses were damaged while trees and electric poles were uprooted at Tambulpur,  Chwala, parul unions under Pirgachha upazila and Kaunia upazila of the district during the storm.

Many trees fell on the roads that snapped traffic for hours.

Later, fire service personnel cleared the damaged trees and plants from the roads.   

Bijoy Mondol, a resident of Ekorcholi area under the Taraganj upazila said that the storm caused huge damage to cropland uprooting trees and electric poles in the villages of the upazila.   Former chairman of Tamulpur union under Pirgachha upazila, Bazlur Rashid, said that many  houses were damaged in  the storm at his union. 

Trees and electric polls were also uprooted, he added.

Abdullah AL Hadi, former chairman of Laxitari union of Gangachara upazila, said that many tin-shed houses were damaged while trees and electric poles were uprooted in villages under the upazila. 

Meanwhile, the nor’wester hit many villages at Kaunia, Mithapukur and Gangachara upazilas in the district and damaged houses, cropland and mango orchards.

Mostafizur Rhaman, a mango farmer at Moyenpur village under Mithapukur upazila of the district said that trees in his mango orchard on four acres of land were partially affected by the storm.

Ayub Ali, deputy general manager of  Rural Electrification Board at Paglapir office of the district, said that electric wires in different places of the district were disconnected as many poles were uprooted due to the nor’wester. Meanwhile, many trees and electric polls were uprooted in the city that snapped the power supply and internet connection all through the night in many areas in the city,

Deputy commissioner of Rangpur, Mohammad Rabiul Faisal, said, ‘We have directed all upazila nirbahi officers to prepare a list of damages.’
