
The students from different polytechnic institutes in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country on Saturday called for holding protest rallies on the campuses of all polytechnic institutes tomorrow.
In a press release, issued on Saturday under the banner of Karigari Chhatra Andolan, Bangladesh, they announced the resumption of their protests over job, promotion and quality higher education just after four days.
Earlier on April 22, they temporarily suspended their protests on the seventh day of their movement.
At that time the students, who had protested since April 16 to press home their six-point demand and at the attack on students in Cumilla, also said that if their demands were not met within the time the ministry sought, they would resume their movement.
The Saturday press release of the movement also urged the polytechnic students to hold protest rallies at all polytechnic campuses at the same time.
On April 16, the polytechnic students across the country staged demonstrations by blocking roads, highways and rail tracks in Dhaka and other districts causing huge sufferings to people to press home their demands, including the cancellation of a High Court verdict that allows the promotion of craft instructors to the post of junior instructor.
The protesting students on April 20 urged the government to accept their demands within 48 hours and threatened to hold long marches towards Dhaka from different corners of the country.
KM Kabirul Islam, secretary of the Technical and Madrassah Education Division under the education ministry, and other senior officials of the ministry and Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh met the representatives of the protesting students on April 21 at the secretariat.
A press release issued by the ministry on April 23 said that the division was working on the six-point demand to meet these and already an eight-member committee had been formed comprising the representatives of the ministry, Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh and students.
The committee would submit its recommendations upon which the next steps would be taken, the release said.
On the same day, the students announced the suspension of their movement temporarily while the Karigari Chhatra Andolan, Bangladesh central representative Mashfiq Islam said that if the government did not meet their demands within the time they would announce a tougher movement.
The students said that the ministry sought three weeks for the purpose.
