
Detectives of the Narcotics Control Department on Tuesday arrested a drug peddling suspect with 6.5 kilograms of banned heroin, worth Tk 6.5 crore, at Madarpur village under Godagari upazila in Rajshahi.
The arrested is Tareq Hossain, son of Rafiqul Islam of Madarpur village in the upazila.
At a press conference, Mohammad Golam Azam, additional director general of DNC, said that on information, a team of the DNC Rajshahi divisional detective branch and the army jointly conducted a drive in the Tirinda Vajanpur area under Godagari upazila on Tuesday morning and detained Rafiqul.
‘Based on the information provided by Rafiqul, the team then recovered 4 kilograms of heroin in eight brown-coloured polythene packets, each containing 500 grams, inside a white plastic sack, which was hidden behind sacks of wheat and corn at his farm,’ Golam Azam said, adding that in the same sack, an additional 2.5 kilograms of heroin were also found in 25 packets, each containing 100 grams.
The official said that they also seized Tk 13 lakh in cash, a mobile phone, and an electric sealer machine from his possession.
‘This is the largest heroin shipment in the history of the narcotics control department,’ the official said, adding that the process of filing a case against the arrested in this regard is under way.
Md Masud Hossain, director of the DNC, said that since opium production was banned in Afghanistan, it now entirely shifted to Myanmar.
‘As Bangladesh shares a border with Myanmar, it has become easier for drugs to enter the country,’ he added.
