Bangladesh Medical University pro-vice-chancellor, research and development, Professor Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader on Tuesday said that a stem cell bank would be launched at the university.

He said this at a seminar titled ‘Dental pulp tissue: a new hope for regenerative medicine’ was held on the university campus in Dhaka, said a press release.


The seminar, chaired by the chairperson of the central seminar sub-committee, Professor Afzalun Nesa, and moderated by Khaled Mahbub Morshed, was attended by the BMU’s pro-vice-chancellor Professor Md Abul Kalam Azad (administration), treasurer Professor Nahreen Akhtar, dean of the faculty of paediatrics, Professor Md Atiar Rahman, chairmen of various departments, teachers, doctors and residents of the university.

Speakers said that there was an opportunity to treat various important organs of the human body through stem cell therapy developed from the marrow between the teeth.

‘This treatment method is effective in replacing damaged tissues of the liver and kidneys. There is also an opportunity to use stem cells in the treatment of various diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and cardiovascular,’ they said.

In the seminar, Mujibur Rahman Howlader presented an article titled ‘Clinical Applications and Future Perspectives in Regenerative Medicine’. Besides, FCPS trainee Siddiqullah presented an article on ‘Biological Potential of Dental Pulp Stem Cells’ and BMU resident Kamrul Islam presented on ‘Simple Steps in Dental Pulp Tissue Engineering’.
