The Dhaka North City Corporation on Tuesday evicted at least 200 makeshift shops from the roads and footpaths in Ward 19 of Gulshan 2.

The DNCC conducted a drive on Tuesday on both sides of Road 97, in front of the DNCC raw market, and behind the DNCC market on Road 98, freeing about two kilometres of roads and footpaths from illegal occupation, said a DNCC press release.

The DNCC, through a mobile court, imposed fines totalling Tk 14,000 in four cases鈥攆ining the owner of an under-construction building Tk 10,000 for placing construction debris on the road, two shopkeepers Tk 1,000 and Tk 2,000 respectively for keeping goods on the road, and another shopkeeper Tk 1,000 for failing to pay city corporation tax.

DNCC executive magistrate Md Shahidul Islam, who led the drive alongside estate officer Farzana Khanom, said that the eviction campaign would continue to alleviate the suffering of the general people.
