The Chhatra Odhikar Parishad on Wednesday demanded that the Dhaka University authorities announce a specific timeframe for Dhaka University Central Students’ Union elections by May and hold an ‘acceptable, participatory, and competitive’ election by June.
The demand was made at a press conference held in front of the DUCSU in Dhaka University building at noon.
Speaking at the event, president of the organisation, Bin Yamin Mollah, said, ‘One of the major commitments of the July uprising was to hold student union elections at Dhaka University and all other universities across the country… Holding the DUCSU elections before the national election is extremely crucial.’
Bin Yamin Molla also said that holding the DUCSU elections were essential to free the university from partisan and subservient politics.
He also demanded that the election be incorporated into the academic calendar as a scheduled event.
‘If the university administration fails to announce a concrete date, we will be compelled to launch a movement with the general students,’ Bin Yamin said.
Sanauallah Haque, convener of the Dhaka University unit, urged the university administration to promptly form an election commission and issue clear directives regarding the possible date for the DUCSU polls.
Sanauallah further called on the university authorities to act responsibly in creating an atmosphere conducive to holding the DUCSU polls.
The last elections to the DUCSU were held in March 2019 after a long gap of 28 years.
The tenure of that DUCSU ended in March 2020. Since then, elections have been on hold for four years. Although students have raised demands for the elections time and again, the university administration took no initiative.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday Dhaka University authorities unveiled a road map for the DUCSU elections.
According to the road map, an election commission will be formed in mid-May, which will later announce the election schedule.
The road map, however, has not specified when the schedule will be announced or when the election will be held.
