The Islami Andolan Bangladesh on Sunday urged the Bangladesh government to stand against the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025, recently passed by the Indian Parliament, terming the move as oppression on Muslim minority people in India.
IAB secretary general Yunus Ahmad in a statement urged the government to send a strong message to India to stop oppression on minority people.
‘India stood by our oppressed people in 1971 and today when people in India are being subjected to oppression, it is our moral duty to stand by them,’ stated Ahmad.
‘Present the picture of oppression on Muslims in India to international organisations and call for steps to protect innocent people, if necessary,’ he urged the government of Bangladesh.
He criticised Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government for becoming an aggressive and occupying force not only in the region but also for the citizens of India itself.
Ahmad mentioned that the practice of Waqf existed long before the formation of the modern Indian state and even before the rise of Hindutva ideology in India.
He claimed that educational and civil society institutions in India and this entire region developed using Waqf properties and the BJP, driven by unjust and communal vengeance, had distorted that historical process and had created a new ground for nationwide oppression on Muslims in India.
The upper house in India passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 on April 4 amid strong criticism from the opposition.
Waqf is an ancient Islamic system of endowment, where an individual permanently donates property, usually land, for religious or charitable purposes. Such Waqf property cannot be sold or transferred to anyone else.
The amendment bill granted non-Muslim members the authority to manage and administer these properties.
