The police on Sunday pressed a charge sheet in the case of the death of an eight-year-old Magura girl after rape to the Magura Chief Judicial Magistrate Court against the husband of the victim’s sister and the sister’s three in-laws.
The prime accused in the charge sheet is Hitu Sheikh, 50, the father-in-law of the victim’s sister, while Sajib Sheikh, the husband of the victim’s sister, and Sajib’s brother Ratul Sheikh were accused of intimidation and threatening to kill the victim.
Prime accused Hitu’s wife Zayeda Khan was accused of hiding information, according to the charge sheet.
Magura Sadar police station officer-in-charge Md Ayub Ali said that Magura chief judicial magistrate Abdul Matin received the charge sheet.
‘Hitu Sheikh made a statement before the court confessing that he had raped the minor girl,’ the OC said, adding that the DNA test report also corroborated Hitu’s confessional statement.
Law adviser Asif Nazrul, addressing a press conference at the secretariat in Dhaka on Sunday, said that they had brought changes to complete the trial within 90 days after submitting a charge sheet in a rape case.
Regarding the case in connection with Magura girl’s death after rape, he hoped that the trial would be completed sooner as the forensic and DNA reports were available and the evidence matched with the DNA report.
The Magura rape incident triggered widespread anti-rape protests in Dhaka as elsewhere in the country for more than a week and the girl died during the protest.
On March 6, the victim was taken to a hospital in Magura in an unconscious state and was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and then to Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
On March 13, the victim died of cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at CMH.
