United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has assured Dhaka to provide its continued support to Bangladesh, especially on Rohingya crisis.

The assurance was made when the outgoing UNHCR representative in Bangladesh Sumbul Rizvi paid a farewell call on foreign secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry on Thursday, said a ministry鈥檚 press release in Dhaka.


During the meeting, foreign secretary congratulated the UNHCR representative on her successful tenure in Bangladesh and appreciated her efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to Rohingya population sheltered in Bangladesh.

Foreign secretary recalled the recent visits of the UN secretary general and the UN high commissioner for refugees to the Rohingya Camps in Cox鈥檚 Bazar.

He highlighted the negative impacts on the host community caused due to prolonged stay of the Rohingyas in Cox鈥檚 Bazar, including the rise of crimes like drug smuggling and human trafficking.

He reiterated that repatriation of the Rohingyas is the only viable solution to the crisis.

Both sides also exchanged their views on the current situation in the Rakhine State and the upcoming high-level conference on the Rohingya crisis.
