Bangladesh Investment聽Development Authority executive chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun on Monday said that the聽government was creating an ecosystem to make business operations in Bangladesh聽much easier.
鈥榃e are going through a very transformational time as you all know that the聽country has gone through a change and we do have this once in a lifetime聽opportunity to potentially change a lot of things that were just given for聽our ecosystem,鈥 he said.
The BIDA chief said this at the opening session titled 鈥楤angladesh Startup聽Connect鈥 at the four-day long investment summit at Intercontinental in the聽city.
Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, also executive chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority, said that once someone landed in Bangladesh physically and聽interacted with the community, interacted with the startups, interacted with聽youth, the perception they had from desktop research dramatically changed.
鈥榃hat we need to probably continue to focus on as an investment promotion聽agency for the government is how we create that bridge between the assets we聽have in the country and the potential liquidity that is available globally,鈥櫬爃e added.
Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun gave a very trivial example on trade licence, which apparently is a very聽big challenge for young businesses to start doing business in Bangladesh.
鈥楾he questions that we really need to ask is not necessarily how we聽streamline the trade licence process, but start from do we even need a trade聽license? And if we do need a trade licence, is it like a birth certificate聽that we give to a company only once in their lifetime and not have them go聽back to the city corporation every year to renew the trade licence? I am聽giving you a very, very trivial example, but that is how the baseline聽currently is. That is how low and deep we need to go to ensure that we create聽an ecosystem that is much easier for businesses to operate,鈥 the BIDA chief聽added.
