An eight-year-old boy was killed and two others were injured during fireworks in Patuakhali on Sunday evening.

Mohammad Rafi, 8, son of fish trader Manir Hawladar, died during fireworks at Munsef Para in the district town at about 9:00pm.


Rafi’s maternal uncle Abul Bashar and other witnesses said that Rafi set off a firework in front of his house. Suddenly the firework exploded with a bang and a part of it ripped into his throat causing bleeding.

Rafi, also a Class I student of a local madrassah, was rushed to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital where doctor declared his dead, they said.

In another incident, Belal Talukdar, 16, and his cousin Md Rabbi, 15, of Haqtulla village at Pakuakhali Sadar, were injured during a firework.

Their uncle Siddiqur Rahman said that the two boys were trying to set off a firework at about 8:00pm, when it exploded injuring the boys. They were also rushed to the same hospital.

Duty doctor at the emergency department of the hospital Nayan Sarkar said that a part of the firework hit Rafi’s respiratory tract causing huge bleeding that caused his death.

The two other boys sustained serious injuries in the hand and eyes and they were referred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital after preliminary treatments, he said.
