Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals for Muslims, was celebrated across Bangladesh on Monday with due solemnity, fervor, and joy, marking the end of Ramadan—the month of fasting and abstinence.

Millions of Muslim devotees attended Eid congregations at mosques, Eidgahs, and makeshift prayer grounds in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.

The country’s main Eid-ul-Fitr congregation was held at the National Eidgah on the High Court premises in the capital at about 8:30am.

Chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus offered Eid prayers at the National Eidgah ground.

Earlier, on Sunday, he issued a message greeting the people of Bangladesh as well as Muslims worldwide on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin offered Eid prayers at Bangabhaban.

An Eid jamaat was held at 8:30am on the premises of the old venue of Dhaka Int’l Trade Fair in the capital’s Agargaon for the first time.

After the prayers, a Mughal-style colorful procession was brought out from the venue. A two-day fair began there in the morning on the occasion of Eid. The fair will remain between 10:00am to 5:00pm.

The first Eid Jamaat was held at 7:00am at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital, followed by the second at 8:00am and the third at 9:00am. The fourth Jamaat was held at 10:00am, and the last and the fifth Eid Jamaat at 10:45am.

Chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus exchanged Eid greetings with dignitaries from different walks of life at the Chief Adviser’s Office in the capital’s Tejgaon area in the afternoon,.

Television channels and radio stations are airing special programs to mark the occasion.

Additionally, special meals were served at hospitals, jails, government children’s homes (Chotomoni Nibash), centers for persons with disabilities, shelter homes, orphanages, and vagrant and destitute welfare centers.

In some villages in Chandpur, Faridpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Chattogram, Jhenaidah, and Bhola, Eid was celebrated on Sunday in line with Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries.

On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner SM Sazzat Ali said that 15,000 police personnel had been deployed across the capital to ensure security.

Eid-ul-Fitr, an Arabic term meaning ‘festival of breaking the fast,’ marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.

On Eid morning, devotees gather at mosques and prayer venues to perform Eid prayers and exchange greetings.

The festival is celebrated by visiting the homes of friends and relatives, hosting feasts, sharing sweets, and offering cash gifts known as ‘Salami.’

Many Muslims also distribute cash and food to those are less fortunate.
