
A pregnant woman pulled from a collapsed apartment block in Mandalay on Sunday after more than 55 hours under the rubble was pronounced dead shortly after she was freed, AFP journalists at the scene saw.
Rescuers thought they had saved the life of Mathu Thu Lwin, 35, but they were unable to resuscitate her after extracting her from the wreckage of the Sky Villa apartment complex, demolished by a huge earthquake which hit Myanmar on Friday.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of the city of Sagaing in central Myanmar on Friday, and also affected Thailand. At least 1,644 people were killed in Myanmar, the junta said, while around 10 others were killed in Bangkok.
