The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has yet to make any decision whether its leader Ishraque Hossain will take the oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, following an Election Tribunal ruling, declaring him the winner in the 2020 city polls.
‘No decision has yet been made at the party forum regarding whether Ishraque will take the oath as DSCC mayor. The matter has not even been discussed,’ BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Saturday.
He said that the issue might be addressed in the next standing committee meeting.
Ishraque had contested the mayoral polls held on February 1 in 2020 as the BNP candidate but was officially declared defeated with the Election Commission announcing Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh as the DSCC mayor.
Later on March 3, 2020, Ishraque filed a case demanding the cancellation of the results of the city polls under section 53 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Election Rules 2010.
He also demanded a re-election, alleging irregularities and corruption in the polls.
Judge Md Nurul Islam of the Election Tribunal on Thursday pronounced the verdict, cancelling the Election Commission gazette that was issued announcing Taposh as winner.
After the court verdict, a celebratory procession led by Ishraque was brought out on the court premises on the day.
Ishraque, son of undivided Dhaka City Corporation’s former mayor late Sadeque Hossain Khoka, in his reaction told reporters that he received justice from the court and his party would decide whether he would take the oath as the DSCC mayor.
After the fall of Awami League government on August 5, 2024 in a student-led mass uprising, the Election Tribunal in Chattogram on October 1 declared BNP leader Shahadat Hossain as mayor of the Chattogram City Corporation following which he took the oath on November 3.
The court declared him as mayor in a case filed by Shahadat on February 24, 2021, seeking the cancellation of the results of the CCC election held on January 27, 2021, claiming that the polls were manipulated by EC officials.
