Former national cricket team captain Tamim Iqbal’s condition ‘was very good’, and he would be able to return home after being monitored for one or two more days, according to doctors at Evercare Hospital, where Tamim was transferred after undergoing major emergency heart surgery at the KPJ Hospital in Gazipur on Thursday.

‘Tamim is very good; he is eating well and talking to everyone,’ said Dr Arif Mahmood at the Evercare Hospital.

‘He will be transferred to the cabin from the Coronary Care Unit [CCU]. Then he will be under observation, and then he will be able to go home.’

However, according to the chief of the medical board that was formed for Tamim—Professor Shahabuddin Talukder—Tamim has gone through a psychological shock after the recent events.

‘It hit him hard; psychologically, he has been finding it hard to believe that it would have happened to him, as he never imagined that,’ said Shahabuddin.

‘But there’s a lot of history. Even many players succumbed to death while playing; many got senseless [before].’

However, it was quite normal for a person like Tamim to act like this, reminded the doctor.

He said, ‘A world-class cricketer, our pride; he will suffer a heart attack. How will he cope with that? It’s hard. But he will have to get used to this.’

As a result, a counsellor was appointed to get Tamim through this.

‘[This was done] to make him cope with this. ‘[The counsellor] will hear his questions, queries, and panics and then guide him according to the situations,’ said Shahabuddin.

Earlier, the doctors said that it would take Tamim at least three months to resume the normal activities, ie, playing cricket.

Shahabuddin echoed that thought.

‘Whether he will return to cricket, that can be confirmed three to four months after a meeting between our cardiac team and the physician’s team,’ he added.

Tamim suffered a massive heart attack while taking part in Mohammedan Sporting Club’s match in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League at the BKSP on Monday.

He was transferred to Dhaka on Tuesday.
