
A Dhaka court on Thursday convicted and sentenced controversial contractor Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim to five and a half years in jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for amassing illegal wealth.
Judge Md Robiul Alam of Dhaka special judge court-4 pronounced the judgement and also fined the convict Tk 1,00,000, in default, to suffer three months more in jail. The court also ordered to seize Tk 297.08 crore of the convict in favour of the state.
The court acquitted co-accused and Shamim鈥檚 mother Ayesha Akter of the charges, Belal Hossain, bench assistant of the court, told BSS.
The ACC on October 21, 2019, filed the case against GK Shamim and his mother Ayesha Akter for amassing illegal wealth of Tk 297.08 crore. The anti-graft body on December 22, 2020, filed charge-sheet against the mother-son duo.
Dhaka special judge court-4 on October 18, 2022, framed charges against the two accused, initiating the trial officially.
