Phil Simmons will continue his role as the Bangladesh national cricket team head coach until the 2027 ODI World Cup, as his contract was extended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Tuesday.Ìý

The former West Indies all-rounder was initially contracted up to the Champions Trophy, which was held recently.Ìý

Simmons’ contract extension, however, was expected, as the chairman of cricket operations of the BCB, Nazmul Abedin Fahim, hinted that they would offer the job to him for a long-term.Ìý

It was learnt that the decision would have been confirmed after the board meeting that was supposed to take place on Monday. But it was cancelled after former national team captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match in Savar.Ìý

The 61-year-old, who replaced Chandika Hathurusingha, who was sacked due to misconduct, in his initial stint with the Bangladesh team between October 2024 and February 2025, served as head coach in the series against South Africa, Afghanistan, the West Indies, and in the Champions Trophy.

Simmons was delighted after his contract was extended. Ìý

‘I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis. The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together. I am looking forward to the journey ahead,’ Simmons was quoted as saying by a BCB press release on Tuesday.

‘Having worked with some exceptional players already, I can see the immense promise in this squad. Their skill and passion for the game inspire me daily. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and create something truly special.

‘My time with the Bangladesh team over the past few months has been incredibly rewarding. The energy, commitment, and ability within this group have been nothing short of impressive. I’m excited to continue helping these players reach their full potential,’ he concluded.Ìý

After representing the West Indies in 26 Tests and 143 ODIs between 1987 and 1999, Simmons began his international coaching career with Zimbabwe in 2004 before going on to coach Ireland from 2007 to 2015.

He was appointed West Indies head coach twice and was in charge when the team won the ICC World T20 in 2016. Simmons also coached Afghanistan from 2018 to 2019.
