The Election Commission is going to cancel the registration of 96 local election observation organisations registered during the ousted Awami League government.

A committee led by election commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar held a meeting in this connection at Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital Dhaka on Thursday.

The meeting also discussed five other issues, including party registration, delimitation of constituencies and polling station management.

According to EC officials, the meeting has finalised its decision to cancel the registration of 96 local election observation organisations and to register new election observation organisations for the forthcoming elections.

Anwarul at the meeting said that no final decision regarding the cancellation of the registration of 96 local election observation organisations was made.

The election commissioner said that discussions were held on the cancellation of registration of the organisations registered before the 12th parliamentary elections and the draft of new election observation policies.

‘No final decision has been made on this issue yet. We have prepared a draft, which will be presented at the commission meeting. Following discussions, the draft will be reviewed, and some organisations will be removed,’ he told reporter after the meeting.

Anwarul said that the decision on the draft could not be disclosed at this moment.

There are a total of 96 registered local election observer organisations in the country, and they received registration for five years before the 12th parliamentary elections.
