
Indian Khasia people allegedly shot at least two Bangladeshis near the Bichhnakandi border at Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet on Wednesday night.
The injured are Yamin Miah, 22, son of Zakir Miah of Kulumchharar Par village under ​​Bichhnakandi union of the Gowainghat upazila, and his uncle Akhter Hossain, the Border Guard Bangladesh said.
Local residents said that several Bangladeshis illegally entered the Indian territory crossing the borderline in the Markitila area of the Bichhnakandi near the Border Pillar No 1264 on Wednesday evening to smuggle sugar from there.
At one point of bargaining over the price of sugar, the Khasia people shot at the Bangladeshis leaving Yamin and Akhter injured, they said.
BGB 48 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Haque confirmed the incident to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
They knew from different sources that the Indian Khasias opened fire on the Bangladeshis after a dispute over money, Nazmul Haque said, adding that after the incident the Bangladeshis, including the injured, returned to the country.Â
‘It’s known that the two victims sustained bullet wounds to their legs and they are taking treatment remaining in hiding,’ the BGB officer said, adding, ‘The BGB is investigating the incident.’
