Prof Kazi Shahidullah

Eminent educationist and former chairman of the University Grants Commission, professor Kazi Shahidullah, died in Australia on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer.

He also held different important positions including vice-chancellor of National University and dean of Dhaka University.聽聽聽


According to a condolence message issued by the University Grants Commission on the day, he is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

He was suffering from cancer for a long time and for treatment, he was staying at his daughter鈥檚 residence in Canberra of Australia where he died at about 1:15pm on Wednesday, it continued.聽

As per the message, professor Shahidullah joined as the 13th UGC chairman on May 26, 2019, for the first term and on May 28, 2023 for the second term.

He had resigned from his position on August 11, 2024, citing his illness as the reason.

He had started teaching as a lecturer of the history department at Dhaka University.

He obtained his PhD degree from Australia and later held positions of the chairman of the history department, dean of arts faculty and member of Dhaka University鈥檚 senate and syndicate.聽

UGC chairman professor SMA Faiz in a the message said that professor Shahidullah was an eminent historian, skilled administrator and organiser.

For his clean image, he was acceptable to everyone regardless of party affiliation, the chairman said.

Professor Faiz prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.
