Derailment of two coaches of a passenger train following collision between two passenger trains at the Rajshahi railway station on Saturday afternoon disrupted schedules of trains on the Rajshahi route for about six hours.
None was injured in the incident as both the trains did not have any passenger on-bound during the accident.
A probe committee was formed in this regard.
Passengers on the Rajshahi route suffered for hours due to delay in journey.
Mohammad Ahsan Ullah Bhuiyan, chief operating superintendent (west) of Bangladesh Railway, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the accident took place at about 1:50pm when the Dhaka-bound Padma Express was coming out of a train wash plant and the Panchagarh-bound Banglabandha Express was entering the wash plant.
‘Due to the station master’s mistake, Banglabandha Express entered the plant track before the Padma Express left the track, causing a collision that left two coaches of the Padma Express derailed,’ he added.
At a train wash plant, the trains are cleaned and checked before journeys.
Rajshahi station manager in-charge Shahidul Islam said that the derailment would cause a delay for the Padma Express to leave for Dhaka from Rajshahi as a relief train from Ishwardi would arrive and rescue the derailed coaches.
Mohiuddin Arif, railway’s Dhaka divisional manager, said that due to the derailment on one line trains on Rajshahi route were late.
Railway’s Paksey divisional manager Md Ahsan Zabir said that the coaches were rescued at around 6:30pm and the line towards Dhaka became clear at around 7:00pm.
‘We did not cancel journeys of any train,’ he said, adding that the Dhaka-bound Padma Express would start shortly.Â
He also said that they had formed a committee to probe the incident.
Mamunul Islam, railway’s general manager (west), meanwhile, said that the incident took place due to a signal error and they were investigating it.
‘Actions will be taken against those responsible for the incident,’ he added.
