Two leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party have been expelled for their involvement in a factional clash that left one BNP activist killed and four others injured at Tanore in Rajshahi on March 11.
The expelled individuals are Tanore upazila BNP convening committee member Mizanur Rahman Mizan, also a former mayor of Tanore municipality, and Pachandar union BNP president Mujibur Rahman.
A press release signed by Rajshahi district BNP convener Abu Sayeed Chand and member secretary Biswanath Sarkar on March 13 stated that Miznur and Mujibur had been expelled from all positions, including their primary membership in the party, based on specific allegations of violating the party’s discipline.
Earlier, on March 11, the Pachandar union BNP organised an iftar mehfil at the Krishnapur Adarsha Women College premises where BNP chairperson’s advisory council member Major General (retd) Sharif Uddin was invited as the chief guest and Mizanur as the key speaker.
However, two factions of the union BNP – one led by Mujibur and another by former Panchandar union BNP president Abdul Momin – locked into a clash at Krishnapur Mor over who would welcome the chief guest to the iftar programme, leaving five people, including Momin’s brother Ganiul Islam, critically injured.
After the clash, Ganiul was admitted to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 3:00pm on March 12 while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Momin filed a murder case with the Tanore police station the following day in connection with his brother’s death against 37 named and 50-60 unnamed BNP leaders and activists, including Mizanur.
