The season’s first heatwave that began on Thursday ended in 24 hours after a slight fall in the day’s temperature.

The highest maximum day temperature on Friday was recorded to be 36.1C at Baghabari in Sirajganj.

On Thursday, Bangladesh’s highest maximum temperature of 37C was recorded in Jashore and Chuadanga districts.

‘A heatwave is declared when day temperature crosses a threshold in a large area,’ said AKM Nazmul Hoque, forecaster at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

The temperature threshold for the heatwave to occur in Bangladesh is 36C. The temperature has to be recorded in a vast area — several adjacent districts.

On Thursday, day temperature had crossed 36C at several weather stations across various districts in the Khulna division. The season’s first heatwave was declared in Khulna, Jashore, Chuadanga, Ishwardi and Faridpur districts.

A climatic research by the BMD revealed recently that heatwaves were more frequent in pre-monsoon season extending between March and May, the hottest season.

April is the hottest month. The research showed that the intensity of heatwaves increased in the pre-monsoon season, implying that the hottest time of year got even warmer.

Heatwaves affected western part of the country most compared with other areas. The number of heatwave days also increased significantly at many stations near the coast, the research said after studying data between 1980 and 2020.

Heatwave days also increased during monsoon, the BMD research said.

On Friday, the maximum day temperature in Dhaka was recorded to be 34.3C.

The next two days might get slightly warmer, the BMD warned in a forecast issued at 6:00pm on Friday, adding that there were chances of rain in parts of northeast region.
