Students of Rajshahi University on Monday blocked the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway in front of the university main entrance for the second consecutive day, protesting against the recent incidents of rape and killings across Bangladesh.

Several hundred students brought out a protest procession on the campus at about 11:00am, and staged a demonstration at the university’s Paris Road, demanding capital punishment for the rapists.

At about 12:10am, the protesting students blocked the highway in front of the university’s main entrance, halting the traffic movement on the both sides of the highway.

Addressing the human chain, Salahuddin Ammar, former coordinator of Student Movement Against Discrimination, said that they did not accept the law adviser’s ‘farce’ timeframe to carry out trial of a rape case within 180 days.

‘If the law adviser cannot ensure safety of our sisters, if the home adviser cannot ensure safety of the country’s citizen, then the interim government has failed,’ he added.

Later, the students withdrew the blockade at about 1:00pm.
