Bangladesh’s FIDE Master Tahsin Tajwar Zia missed the opportunity to secure an International Master norm at the World Junior (Under-20) Chess Championship after being defeated by Israeli Grandmaster Sokolovsky Yahli in the final round in Petrovac, Montenegro, on Friday.

Tahsin finished 51st out of 157 players in the open category of the championship after he was tied for 44th place with six points from eleven matches in the tie breaking system.

The 20-year-old Tahsin previously earned one of the three required norms to gain IM status during the Zonal Chess Championship in Dhaka two years ago.

He improved his chance to earn his second IM norm with 2439 performance rating points—11 less than the required 2450—after beating Azerbaijan IM Talibov Shiroghlan in the seventh round.

But his opportunity faded after losing to Mexican IM Medina Sion Radamantys in the next round.

Tahsin drew against Canadian IM Atanasov Anthony in the ninth round but then lost to IM Ansat Aldiyar of Kazakhstan in the following round. This made the 11th-round match against Yahli a must-win game for him to secure an IM norm.

Another Bangladeshi campaigner, IM Manon Reja Neer, ended in 83rd place with 5.5 points after losing to Cao Qingfeng of China in the 11th round.

Indian GM Venkatesh Pranav emerged as unbeaten champions of the event with nine points from 11 games.

A total of 157 players, including 12 GMs, 37 IMs, and 44 FMs from 58 countries, took part in the championship that started on February 25.
