A Bangladeshi youth was beaten to death by Khasia tribesmen of India on Sylhet border in early hours on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shahed Miah, 25, son of Moshahid Miah of Mangalpur village at Kanaighat upazila, the Border Guard Bangladesh said.

Locals said that Shahed was involved in smuggling Indian goods in the country and he entered the Indian territory through the Kanaighat border at about 3:00am on Friday.

At one point after entering the Indian territory, Shahed locked in a clash with smugglers from the Khasia tribesmen over setting the price of the goods and the Khasia tribesmen beat him to death, the locals said.

Border Guard Bangladesh 19 battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Emdadul Haque told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘Being contacted, the Border Security Force of India confirmed the BGB over the death and they sent a photo of the victim’s body,’ he said adding that the family members of Shahed identified the body after seeing the photo.

The BGB official told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the afternoon that he contacted his Indian counterpart over phone and they assured him of handing over the victim’s body to the BGB after completion of required formality.

‘The BSF authorities also assured of taking legal steps against their citizens involved in the killing,’ the BGB official added.
