The newly formed student organisation Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad on Saturday held a meet-and-greet with leaders of other student organisations to mark the launch of the new student organisation.

The event took place on Saturday at around 5:30pm with the participation of central and Dhaka University unit leaders from various student organisations.

At the event, Yasin Arafat, president of the Islami Chhatra Andolan, stated that the Awami League had centralised 1971 around itself.

He emphasised that the July uprising should not be centralised under one party and that they would engage in politics based on reality.

Abdul Kader, convener of the Dhaka University unit of the newly formed organisation, said, ‘We want to create a space for healthy politics on the campus, ensuring everyone’s political coexistence.’

Salman Siddiqui, president of the Socialist Students’ Front, emphasised the need for student organisations to speak up for students’ rights, stating that they oppose the politics of occupation and terror.

‘Depoliticisation is not a solution. The solution lies in an ideology-driven politics that secures students’ rights and allows us to fight for democracy,’ said Salman Siddiqui.

Saikat Arif, general secretary of the Bangladesh Student Federation, noted that the foundation of unity was currently weak and stressed that Bangladesh would have to fight against many forms of fascism in the future.

Other speakers at the event included Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad convener Abu Baker Mazumder, Khaled Saifullah from Bangladesh Chhatra Pakkha, Meghmallar Bosu from the Students’ Union, Mansura Alam from Chhatra Dal, Zahid Ahsan (central member secretary of Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad), Mohir Alam (Dhaka University unit member secretary of Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad), Jabir Ahmed Jubel from Revolutionary Student Unity, among others.
