
Young artist Md Zahurul Islam has portrayed the stories of abused women and children in his first solo exhibition titled Ignition of Metaphor under way at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka.
The week-long exhibition is featuring 37 artworks created with patina, wood carving and intricate tapestry weaving, which attempt to portray the agonies of women and children in society.
Zahurul Islam aims at creating social awareness in his artworks that blend traditional and contemporary crafts with post-modern and abstract approach.
‘In Bangladesh, many rape cases occur every year. In most of the cases, the persons who commit rape are not brought to book as they are powerful and victims are ordinary people,’ said Zahurul Islam.
He also added that he tried to raise voices for freedom of speech, human rights and social justice creating artworks.
‘Ensuring the rights and dignity of women is essential for building a just and equal society,’ the artist mentioned.
Inaugurated on February 21, the exhibition will end today.
