Bangladesh were knocked out of the Champions Trophy as they lost to New Zealand by five wickets in a must-win game at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Monday.
After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh only managed 236-9 in 50 overs after the middle order failed to turn up.
New Zealand chased that down in 46.1 overs (240-5) thanks to a fine hundred by Rachin Ravindra, who was back in the side after an injury.听
As a result, New Zealand, along with India, were through to the semi-finals, whereas Pakistan were also eliminated with Bangladesh.
That means Bangladesh鈥檚 last group stage match against Pakistan at the same venue on Thursday will be a dead rubber as it won鈥檛 affect any equation.
After losing to India, Bangladesh needed to win the match to stay in contention for the semi-finals.
A much-improved performance from the openers put Bangladesh on course in the first 10 overs when the score was 58-1.
But the Tigers lost the plot in the second power play as dot balls mounted pressure on them. That forced Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, and Mushfiqur Rahim to throw their wickets away.
All were victims of left-arm spinner Michael Bracewell, who finished on 4-26 in his 10 overs.
Bangladesh have given 60.33 per cent dot balls in their allotted overs on a wicket where scoring shouldn鈥檛 be that tough.
Najmul Hossain Shanto (77 off 110) tried to hold it together but couldn鈥檛 finish things off. Contributions from Jaker Ali (45 off 55) and Rishad Hossain (26 off 25) helped Bangladesh to go past the 200-mark.
Taskin Ahmed then struck in the first over to get Will Young鈥攐ne of the centurions of the previous match鈥攃lean bowled.
Nahid Rana, who was playing his first ICC tournament match, had the best batter of New Zealand, Kane Williamson, caught behind with a fine delivery.听
A 57-run partnership between Devon Conway and Ravindra steadied the ship for the Kiwis as they both found the gaps regularly in both during and after the first 10 overs.
Mustafizur Rahman broke that partnership by dismissing Conway (30 off 45), but Bangladesh had to wait long to get the next one.
They missed opportunities in the field as Ravindra got three reprieves before and after completing his fourth ODI hundred in his career.
Tanzid Hasan missed a direct throw when Ravindra was on 26, while Miraz grassed a catch when the left-hander was on 93.
Ravindra got his third life after reaching his hundred as Mahmudullah dropped a catch at mid-on. Rishad finally saw the back of him, but by that point, the damage was done.
Ravindra rotated the strike regularly to keep the scoreboard ticking even when the boundaries were dried up.
Bangladesh, though, had Tom Latham run out on 55 by virtue of a direct throw from Mahmudullah, but that didn鈥檛 make any difference as Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell took them home comfortably.
