Two committees were formed by the Chauddagram upazila administration and Gunabati Degree College authorities on Saturday to probe the incident of vandalism of a Shaheed Minar on the college campus in Cumilla.
The incident has sparked a storm of condemnation and anger in the district.
Earlier, the Shaheed Minar was vandalised at Gunabati Degree College at Chauddagram early Friday after tributes had been paid to the language martyrs by placing wreaths at the altar of the Shaheed Minar marking Bhasha Shaheed Dibas and International Mother Language Day.
On Saturday afternoon, Chauddagram upazila nirbahi officer Md Jamal Hossain said that the issue of vandalism of Shaheed Minar was a sensitive issue.
‘We are looking into this issue very seriously,’ he said, adding that they had formed a three-member investigation committee headed by upazila agriculture officer Jobayer Ahmed to find out the actual reason behind the incident.
The committee was asked to submit its report within next 72 hours, the UNO said.
The two other members of the committee are upazila engineer Md Nuruzzaman and secondary education officer AKM Mir Hossain, he added.
Gunbati Degree College acting principal Abdul Latif said that they also had formed an investigation committee headed by the college teachers’ council general secretary of and assistant professor Sarwar Osman.
They would submit a report on the incident within next seven days.
College authorities said that college teachers first placed a wreath at the Shaheed Minar at one minute past midnight on Friday followed by Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and others and all left the campus at about 12:30am.
Later, a loud sound was heard on the campus at about 2:00am and the guard of the college rushed to the spot and found that two of the three arches of the Shaheed Minar had been broken, college principal Abdul Latif said.
The ordinary students could not pay their tributes to the martyrs at the Shahid Minar in the morning, said the college teachers.
